Gayatri Havan brought together devotion, music, fire, voices and a room full of people moving through the same rhythm. My job was to help make that experience clear and uninterrupted: I handled sound and helped run the full audiovisual operation with a team.
It was a bigger responsibility than simply placing microphones and pressing record. Every part of the room depended on another part. The priests and singers needed to hear one another, the audience needed speech and music to feel natural, and the video team needed reliable feeds and clear communication. The best result would be one that almost disappeared—technology doing its work without pulling attention away from the ceremony.
Building the system before the event
The work started before anyone heard a note. We planned microphone placement, mixer inputs, loudspeaker coverage, camera positions, cable paths and power. A havan is not a static stage performance. People move, instruments enter and leave, spoken sections change in level, and the fire becomes both a visual centre and a practical constraint.
That meant every choice had to balance quality with safety and flexibility. A microphone that sounds perfect but blocks movement is not the right microphone. A camera angle that looks beautiful but interferes with the ceremony is not the right angle. Good AV design begins with understanding what the event is for.
Mixing a living room, not a recording
Live sound constantly changes. One voice can be soft and the next can be strong. A tabla, harmonium or group response can quickly alter the balance. I watched levels, listened for feedback, adjusted gain and kept the sound full without making it feel amplified for its own sake.
The room itself was part of the mix. Reflections, audience noise and the natural energy of collective singing all shaped what people heard. Technical meters helped, but listening to the room mattered more.
The full AV picture
Sound was only one part of the operation. With the team, I also helped coordinate the wider AV workflow: cameras, framing, monitoring, signal routing and the timing of changes. Each person had a role, but none of those roles could be isolated. A camera move could affect a cable route. A microphone change could affect the recording feed. A cue from the ceremony could require several people to react together.
Clear communication became as important as technical skill. Short instructions, confirmed handoffs and shared awareness prevented small changes from becoming visible problems. When something needed attention, the team responded quietly and kept the event moving.
What teamwork changed
Running AV with a team taught me that leadership is not about controlling every detail. It is about building a system in which people can make good decisions. We divided responsibilities, trusted one another and stayed ready to support whichever area needed help.
That trust made the operation more resilient. If one person was focused on a camera adjustment, someone else could watch the audio. If the ceremony changed pace, the team could adapt without stopping to redesign the plan.
What I am taking forward
Gayatri Havan showed me that production work is ultimately service. The equipment, software and technique matter because they help people hear, see and remember something meaningful. The strongest moment for me was not a dramatic technical save. It was realizing that, when the system was working well, the room could simply stay present.
I came away with better instincts for live mixing, camera coordination and signal flow, but also with a clearer idea of what a production team should feel like: prepared, calm, attentive and almost invisible.
